UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development is an opportunity for an unprecedented global effort to drastically improve the current conditions of the world’s ocean through science-based solutions and increased cooperation.

It aims to create a paradigm shift in the generation of qualitative and quantitative ocean knowledge—including from data poor regions such as the deep ocean, lesser known coastal areas, or the polar regions—to inform the development of solutions that contribute to sustainable development.

Marine Research Plymouth is playing a central role in this global effort through co-chairing and participation in multiple Ocean Decade endorsed Programmes, Projects, Activities and Committees, including those highlighted below.

If you wish to discuss Plymouth's role in the Ocean Decade, please contact our Ocean Decade Virtual Office.

Meet up with us at the UN Ocean Decade Conference 2024 in Barcelona. We are there from 8-12 April. Find out more here.

UN Ocean Decade Programmes

led or co-led by Plymouth

Challenger 150

This global co-operative of science and innovation will inform understanding of how deep-sea changes impact the wider ocean and our planet as a whole, while building capacity and diversity in the global deep-sea scientific community.

The Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS) Programme

OARS seeks to further develop the science of ocean acidification, including observing changes in ocean chemistry, identifying the impacts on marine life and helping to support the sustainability of marine ecosystems.

Ocean Biomolecular Observing Network (OBON)

OBON aims to develop a global system that will allow science and society to understand ocean life like never before, with a focus on on biomolecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins.

Marine Life 2030

Marine Life 2030 aims to establish a globally coordinated system to deliver actionable, transdisciplinary knowledge of ocean life to those who need it, promoting human well-being, sustainable development, and ocean conservation. Forming a network of networks, it will link technical, management and policy stakeholders to build and exchange capacity for advancing society’s grand challenges of managing activities for a healthy and resilient ocean and the vibrant and healthy society that depends on it.
