Sustainable Blue Economy

In order to harness the ocean’s resources to support societies and economies, we need a detailed understanding of our impact on it. Major opportunities exist in aquaculture, coastal tourism, biotechnology, renewable energy and other coastal and offshore industries. However, it is vital to apply a whole-system approach to ensure the environment is managed in a balanced and ecologically-sensitive way.

Marine Research Plymouth supports the sustainable growth of the blue economy. Across our organisations, we have for decades provided world-leading scientific knowledge and developed tools to understand the risks and trade-offs involved with developing the blue economy. We have led calls for the development of a UK network of Marine Parks, with Plymouth chosen in 2021 to host the UK’s first National Marine Park.

We are leading pioneering research in areas such as climate-sensitive marine spatial planning, innovative new uses for resources such as plankton and seaweed, and efforts to improve the environmental footprint of the maritime sector.

Through these initiatives, and others across the world, our scientists are part of a ground-breaking drive to help communities appreciate the individual and collective value of the marine environment. We continue to support policy makers and environmental managers worldwide, and are helping to advance the sustainable management of UK’s marine resources by training the next generation of innovative transdisciplinary engaged researchers.
