Digital Ocean

Plymouth is the UK’s leading hub for the development and application of autonomous marine systems. It also boasts unrivalled capabilities in the use of digital technologies and techniques to expand our understanding of the ocean and climate at a local and global scale.

Scientists across our three partners are pushing the boundaries of how these innovations can be applied in such a way that they monitor and process key parameters for research in areas such as climate science. We are also playing a defining role in the testing and trialling of innovative new commercial marine technologies.

This includes the integrated monitoring taking place within the Western Channel Observatory, combining in-situ data with satellite observations, and the recent launch of the ground-breaking SmartSound Plymouth fleet of autonomous platforms (which includes the most advanced data buoy of its kind alongside a series of robotic vessels).

We are also exploring ways to apply such innovations in critical and emerging sectors including clean maritime and offshore renewable energy. And as artificial intelligence and machine learning unlock new opportunities in how data is interpreted, our scientists are working on the next generation of advanced digital science applications.

E1 Data Buoy, taking in-water measurements, is located at the far south west extent of the Smart Sound Plymouth, some 20 nautical miles south of Plymouth.
