Safe Seas

The ocean and coastal areas are volatile environments in which conditions can change rapidly and dramatically (in both the short and longer term) due to a variety of natural and human factors. Accurate forecasting is therefore critical to ensuring maritime safety and security, in addition to the sustainable use of marine resources.

Marine Research Plymouth brings together world-leading expertise in coastal research, satellite observation, and the application of data.

Through such a joined-up approach, we are creating services and solutions in areas such as threat and emergency response, flood and coastal management, harmful algal blooms (which impact fisheries), and the prevention of industrial pollution and contamination.

Plymouth boasts the UK’s largest group of coastal researchers, the only such group in Europe capable of measuring extreme storm responses. We also offer pioneering capabilities in Earth observation, marine data management and processing, as well as the testing and application of products and tools to support ‘safer’ seas for the benefit of society and the environment.
